Wallpaper Care: Read the Finish Before Cleaning
Understand wallpaper cleaning labels and plan care for decorative wallcoverings without assuming every finish is washable or suitable for scrubbing.

The right cleaning method depends on the wallcovering, not just the mark on the wall. York’s glossary distinguishes care ratings such as spongeable, washable, and scrubbable. Those terms are not interchangeable, and the instructions for the exact product should guide routine maintenance.
Keep the product information
Save a label and the manufacturer’s care instructions after installation. Record the item number and colorway so you can identify the finish later. A folder with those details is more useful than trying to recognize the wallpaper from a photograph months afterward.
Ask where leftover material will be stored. Label it clearly and keep it according to the supplier’s recommendations; do not assume every leftover piece will be suitable for a future repair.
Match care to the material
Do not use an abrasive cleaner or a wet cleaning method simply because another wallpaper tolerated it. Avoid escalating from gentle cleaning to scrubbing without checking the instructions.
For an unfamiliar stain, identify the material first. If the guidance is unclear, contact the supplier before experimenting on a visible section of the wall.
Plan busy areas deliberately
An entryway, restaurant, or hallway may face different wear than a bedroom. Discuss maintenance expectations when selecting the wallcovering, before installation is scheduled. Appearance and suitability should both be part of the decision.
