Old Wallpaper Under New Wallpaper: Review Before Covering

Old Wallpaper Under New Wallpaper: Review Before Covering. Putting new wallpaper over an existing wallcovering should not be treated as a shortcut by default.

Design inspiration imagery: York Wallcoverings. Not an ETT completed project.

Putting new wallpaper over an existing wallcovering should not be treated as a shortcut by default. The old material, its attachment, and the selected new product all need assessment. A clean-looking surface can still conceal preparation questions.

Show the existing condition

Photograph seams, corners, and areas behind furniture. Tell the installer whether any sections are loose or have been repaired. Provide the new wallpaper instructions and avoid ordering based on the assumption that removal will be unnecessary.

Ask for a defined recommendation

Have the contractor explain the proposed preparation and any removal included in the quote. Keep those stages separate so you know what is being priced. The goal is a suitable surface for the chosen finish, not simply the fastest way to cover an older pattern.
